How lasers help reduce food waste

33% of fruit and vegetables go to waste before they reach the consumer – and 10% of the waste happens during long-term storage.

Fresh fruit vegetables

Every year, apples, pears, and blueberries alone account for a EUR 6.1 billion loss globally. If only we could monitor stored fruit continuously, we could prevent as much as 50% of the storage losses.

But wait, we can – very soon.

A European consortium is commercializing a real-time multi-gas detector that can reduce fruit waste. The sensor is based on a spectrometer and our supercontinuum laser and will be commercially available in 2023.
